Regardless of the actual numbers, most agree that what matters is the island’s symbolism, and the House of Slaves is best considered a memorial as opposed to a historic site.
The island stopped being used to hold slaves in around 1848 when France abolished its slave trade. West African men, women and children would usually be caught inside and sent to Gorée Island, where they would be imprisoned until a boat arrived. This chilling history is echoed in the House of Slaves; there used to be multiple houses around the island, but this is the only one that remains a relic of its past. During the years of the Trans Atlantic slave trade, from the 15th to 19th century, Gorée Island was used to hold captive slaves before they were transported to North America. An evocative structure complete with iron shackles and dingy cells where the slaves were said to have been crushed together in horrifying darkness, awaiting their inescapable fate.
As the ceremony drew to a close, Hammond asked the descendants and guests to form a circle on the lawn set between two cabins that once served as living quarters for enslaved people. They held hands and sang along as Arlington’s Mt. Zion Baptist Church led into “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the anthem that has long been the galvanizing song of America’s Black civil rights movements. One hundred and sixty years after the last men, women and children enslaved on Robert E. According to the original curator of the museum, Boubacar Joseph Ndiaye, the island played a pivotal role in the containment and transportation of slaves to America during the transatlantic slave trade. The aim of the museum and memorial is to help its visitors come to terms with the extent of the transatlantic slave trade and the effects of the trade on Africa and its people. The content of the museum includes murals and artwork showcasing traditional African techniques, and depicting the process of enslavement.
Perhaps the most sobering spot in the House of Slaves, is the door in the rear of the house leading to the seashore. Accordingly, black slave owners were relatively uncommon, however, as "of the two and a half million African Americans living in the United States in 1850, the vast majority [were] enslaved."[1] This event remains a controversial topic among proponents of Afrocentrism.

Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, its architecture is characterized by the contrast between the grim slave-quarters and the elegant houses of the slave traders. Today it continues to serve as a reminder of human exploitation and as a sanctuary for reconciliation.

To create more educational space, the Sites of Conscience team has proposed relocating many museum functions – such as ticketing and administration – to an 18th century house across the street that the Senegalese government recently donated for that purpose.

Many of these concerns arose again last year, when Ritter put forward plans for a 100-bed shelter in Hollywood. “It is absolutely the largest nonprofit fund-raiser in the city of New York, and the largest child-care agency in the country.
