Its toasty indoor thalassotherapy-style pool is lined with panoramic windows, and its badestamp (a traditional Norwegian outdoor hot tub) also offers stunning views. An additional three pools at the Aquavit Terrace are set at various temperatures for all preferences. However, they are all first-come, first-served, and spots on the sub can be difficult to snag. Guests gain firsthand experience with onboard scientists, touring the lab facilities, participating in experiments, and exploring the cavernous hangar storing the zodiac boats, Special Op Boats, and the cool submarines. After a day of exploration, The Nordic Spa offers guests the opportunity to experience the latest healthy Nordic traditions, with a heated indoor pool with large windows and a badestamp, the typical outdoor hot tub.

Antarctica & South Georgia Island
It was my first time in Antarctica — and also my seventh continent — and I’ve never been so wondrously overwhelmed by a place in my life. Our introductory landing off of Viking Polaris was just the start of several more to come, and I was already deeply in love with the southernmost cruise destination. Follow in the wake of ancient explorers, who sailed these waters in search of new lands. Sail in the wake of intrepid explorers as you traverse the waters of the Chilean fjords. Researchers visiting from partner institutions are part of the Viking Expedition Team, comprising 36 experts who guide guests through significant scientific work, providing explanations during land excursions, as well as world-class lectures onboard. Where passengers will really notice the size is in the sheer amount of public spaces.
Outdoor spaces for taking in the destination
By Day 4 of our exploration time, fewer passengers were showing up for the Zodiac cruises. The windy conditions and driving sleet proved to be a deterrent to many people, who would rather stay warm with a leisurely breakfast. Additionally, an expansive double-decker Explorers’ Lounge observation venue is at the forward top of the ship, and The Living Room and The Library are equally scenic just behind. Not surprisingly, onboard entertainment is relatively sparse beyond a large library of free on-demand content and occasional film screenings. But The Aula is an architecturally stunning double-level theater with wraparound windows (and the outdoor Finse Terrace behind) overlooking the stern that stages daily briefings and lectures from Polaris’ outstanding expedition staff.
Buenos Aires
It’s pretty much the smell of the food they eat, and for a lack of better words, the poop that gets shot out when they bend over to defecate. They eat mostly krill, which is super fishy smelling, and you’ll smell it most when you get close their main nesting area. We didn’t smell it much though since we preferred hanging out closer to shore to observe them swimming in the water or waddling along the coastline. Viking reserves the right to correct errors or omissions and to change any and all fares, fees and surcharges at any time. The cruise ship fuel surcharge is additional revenue to Viking Cruises, as are any additional charges relating to currency fluctuation other than for fully paid cruise fares and full fares, which fluctuations are beyond our control. Complete terms and conditions may be found in the Passenger Ticket Contract. Celebrate an unforgettable holiday season on this ultimate adventure that features two additional days of discovery on the Antarctic peninsula.
That's because IAATO -- the organization that regulates tour operators in Antarctica -- limits the number of people who can be at landing sites at the same time. To be able to get all passengers on land, Viking Polaris needs two consecutive time slots at each site, which can be difficult to snag during the short high season. I'm on a Viking Expeditions Cruise in Antartica, onboard Viking Polaris, the newest expedition ship from Viking and a sister to Viking Octantis; both ships debuted in 2022. Explore the “Last Continent,” teeming with penguins, seals, whales and other wildlife.
Margaritaville at Sea Announces Second Cruise Ship
Hagen recently met with the award-winning British photographer Alastair Miller, engaging in a pleasant conversation about his journey in the “White Continent” aboard the Viking Polaris. They discussed the intriguing story of how Hagen’s passion for travel and interest in remote destinations began during his childhood when he sent a letter to Ushuaia from his home in Norway. And that atmosphere of fun exploration and camaraderie, while still living large, is why I'm so happy that I went with Viking for my first Antarctica trip. I still want that excitement and adventure that Antarctica brings, but without the pressure to wear myself out.
Admire Nuuk’s rugged beauty and the icy wilderness of the Canadian High Arctic. Pass through the scenic Canadian Maritimes, sail along the famed St. Lawrence Seaway and visit historic cities along the East Coast. Navigate the striking Chilean Fjords, before exploring the icy realm of Antarctica. More rugged, helicopter-sightseeing and polar-plunge experiences are probably available on other lines visiting Antarctica, but clients looking for the most comfortable (and tasty) way to visit the icy continent should certainly consider Viking. Whenever disembarking — often from a Zodiac to wet and slippery shores — was particularly challenging, the staff lined up along the path to offer a helping hand to visitors every 10 feet or so to ensure no one ever took a tumble. Given Viking’s mostly mature yet mobile demographic, this was most welcome, and even as a millennial, I appreciated the extra effort that was always made on our behalf.
Viking Antarctic Expedition Cruise Excursions
Gaze out over Arctic waters as you sail Baffin Bay, home to an array of marine life. Immerse yourself in Ilulissat’s Arctic heritage; admire the pristine waters of its ice fjord. On the occasional clear and dry day, the ship hosted alfresco barbecue lunches on the sun deck — and what Viking served here were none other than complimentary porterhouse steaks, lobster tails and one-pound burgers. To say that the food on Polaris is hearty (and as healthy as desired) would be an understatement.
It houses the specialty crafts used to transport passengers daily to their scenic destinations. Near the hangar is the almost 400-square-foot science laboratory where scientists conduct research. I was already familiar with Viking’s expedition vessels, having sailed earlier on Viking Octantis in the Caribbean, but my time on sister-ship Polaris in Antarctica was an even greater showing of the line’s excellence in adventure cruising.
Witness towering glaciers, snow-covered landscapes, massive icebergs and once-in-a-lifetime wildlife viewing. In the footsteps of explorers such as Amundsen, Shackleton and Scott, you will be one of the few to discover the world’s last truly wild frontier. Each day brings new surprises and the opportunity to change plans to maximize wildlife sightings and adapt to ever-changing weather.
We were lucky to spot numerous whales swimming near the ship and also during kayaking and boat excursions. I loved how graceful they were - moving in and out of the surface with the final tail dipping down into the water. The Bow is a significant platform at the bow with a view, while in inclement weather, The Shelter is a comfortable, partially enclosed space where guests can warm up with a hot beverage before returning outdoors.
