Its toasty indoor thalassotherapy-style pool is lined with panoramic windows, and its badestamp (a traditional Norwegian outdoor hot tub) also offers stunning views. Antarctica & South Georgia Island

It was my first time in Antarctica — and also my seventh continent — and I’ve never been so wondrously overwhelmed by a place in my life. Our introductory landing off of Viking Polaris was just the start of several more to come, and I was already deeply in love with the southernmost cruise destination. Follow in the wake of ancient explorers, who sailed these waters in search of new lands. Sail in the wake of intrepid explorers as you traverse the waters of the Chilean fjords. Researchers visiting from partner institutions are part of the Viking Expedition Team, comprising 36 experts who guide guests through significant scientific work, providing explanations during land excursions, as well as world-class lectures onboard. Where passengers will really notice the size is in the sheer amount of public spaces.

Outdoor spaces for taking in the destination

By Day 4 of our exploration time, fewer passengers were showing up for the Zodiac cruises. The windy conditions and driving sleet proved to be a deterrent to many people, who would rather stay warm with a leisurely breakfast. Additionally, an expansive double-decker Explorers’ Lounge observation venue is at the forward top of the ship, and The Living Room and The Library are equally scenic just behind. Not surprisingly, onboard entertainment is relatively sparse beyond a large library of free on-demand content and occasional film screenings. But The Aula is an architecturally stunning double-level theater with wraparound windows (and the outdoor Finse Terrace behind) overlooking the stern that stages daily briefings and lectures from Polaris’ outstanding expedition staff.

Buenos Aires

It’s pretty much the smell of the food they eat, and for a lack of better words, the poop that gets shot out when they bend over to defecate. They eat mostly krill, which is super fishy smelling, and you’ll smell it most when you get close their main nesting area. We didn’t smell it much though since we preferred hanging out closer to shore to observe them swimming in the water or waddling along the coastline. Viking reserves the right to correct errors or omissions and to change any and all fares, fees and surcharges at any time. The cruise ship fuel surcharge is additional revenue to Viking Cruises, as are any additional charges relating to currency fluctuation other than for fully paid cruise fares and full fares, which fluctuations are beyond our control. Complete terms and conditions may be found in the Passenger Ticket Contract. Celebrate an unforgettable holiday season on this ultimate adventure that features two additional days of discovery on the Antarctic peninsula.

That's because IAATO -- the organization that regulates tour operators in Antarctica -- limits the number of people who can be at landing sites at the same time. To be able to get all passengers on land, Viking Polaris needs two consecutive time slots at each site, which can be difficult to snag during the short high season. I'm on a Viking Expeditions Cruise in Antartica, onboard Viking Polaris, the newest expedition ship from Viking and a sister to Viking Octantis; both ships debuted in 2022. Explore the “Last Continent,” teeming with penguins, seals, whales and other wildlife.

Margaritaville at Sea Announces Second Cruise Ship

Hagen recently met with the award-winning British photographer Alastair Miller, engaging in a pleasant conversation about his journey in the “White Continent” aboard the Viking Polaris. They discussed the intriguing story of how Hagen’s passion for travel and interest in remote destinations began during his childhood when he sent a letter to Ushuaia from his home in Norway. And that atmosphere of fun exploration and camaraderie, while still living large, is why I'm so happy that I went with Viking for my first Antarctica trip. I still want that excitement and adventure that Antarctica brings, but without the pressure to wear myself out.

Admire Nuuk’s rugged beauty and the icy wilderness of the Canadian High Arctic. Pass through the scenic Canadian Maritimes, sail along the famed St. Lawrence Seaway and visit historic cities along the East Coast. Navigate the striking Chilean Fjords, before exploring the icy realm of Antarctica. More rugged, helicopter-sightseeing and polar-plunge experiences are probably available on other lines visiting Antarctica, but clients looking for the most comfortable (and tasty) way to visit the icy continent should certainly consider Viking. Whenever disembarking — often from a Zodiac to wet and slippery shores — was particularly challenging, the staff lined up along the path to offer a helping hand to visitors every 10 feet or so to ensure no one ever took a tumble. Given Viking’s mostly mature yet mobile demographic, this was most welcome, and even as a millennial, I appreciated the extra effort that was always made on our behalf.

Viking Antarctic Expedition Cruise Excursions

Gaze out over Arctic waters as you sail Baffin Bay, home to an array of marine life. Immerse yourself in Ilulissat’s Arctic heritage; admire the pristine waters of its ice fjord. On the occasional clear and dry day, the ship hosted alfresco barbecue lunches on the sun deck — and what Viking served here were none other than complimentary porterhouse steaks, lobster tails and one-pound burgers. To say that the food on Polaris is hearty (and as healthy as desired) would be an understatement.

It houses the specialty crafts used to transport passengers daily to their scenic destinations. Near the hangar is the almost 400-square-foot science laboratory where scientists conduct research. I was already familiar with Viking’s expedition vessels, having sailed earlier on Viking Octantis in the Caribbean, but my time on sister-ship Polaris in Antarctica was an even greater showing of the line’s excellence in adventure cruising.

Witness towering glaciers, snow-covered landscapes, massive icebergs and once-in-a-lifetime wildlife viewing. In the footsteps of explorers such as Amundsen, Shackleton and Scott, you will be one of the few to discover the world’s last truly wild frontier. Each day brings new surprises and the opportunity to change plans to maximize wildlife sightings and adapt to ever-changing weather.

We were lucky to spot numerous whales swimming near the ship and also during kayaking and boat excursions. I loved how graceful they were - moving in and out of the surface with the final tail dipping down into the water. The Bow is a significant platform at the bow with a view, while in inclement weather, The Shelter is a comfortable, partially enclosed space where guests can warm up with a hot beverage before returning outdoors.

Given we have sailed on all three of her sister ships, we were eager to complete the class with this cruise on Norwegian Joy. Plus, this Norwegian Joy cruise to Bermuda featured 3 days in port giving us plenty of time to explore onboard and ashore. Unlike Caribbean cruises, Bermuda cruises are tightly controlled in order to keep the crowds to a minimum. This means that families planning to cruise to Bermuda in the summer (when school is out) should generally book at least 90 days in advance.

Our Final Night on Norwegian Joy

The Dockyard area near the cruise ship has quite a lot to do and see, however do plan your Bermuda itinerary carefully. In the parish of Hamilton, you’ll also find some of Bermuda’s oldest historic churches. In particular, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity is worth a visit. On weekdays it’s open to guests who wish to climb the tower, where you experience incredible views of Hamilton city. Bermuda cruises have North East departures leaving from New York, New Jersey, Boston and Baltimore. This is a convenient for many Americans and Canadians who like to drive to their port or have a short flight.

We'll coordinate your roundtrip flights, and transportation between the airport and cruise port. The saddest day of our Norwegian Joy cruise to Bermuda had come–disembarkation day! Last evening, we put one of our suitcases outside and would carry off the other one.

Sleeping in until about 7 AM, we got ready and headed out for breakfast at the Local. This complimentary option is a great alternative to the buffet on NCL ships. Day 7 of our Norwegian Joy cruise to Bermuda was a final sea day as we cruised back to New York. Day 5 of our Norwegian Joy cruise to Bermuda was our second day in port. We had a Bermuda Triangle cruise excursion booked for this evening. Our original plan was to spend the day at Horseshoe Bay Beach, but the weather was not in our favor again today.

Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves

In addition, average cruise prices are updated nightly. If you are looking for something different that is not often on the cruiser’s radar, make your way to Tom Moore’s Jungle in the parish of Hamilton.

With our cave tours complete around 1 PM, we made our way across the street to the Swizzle Inn, Bermuda’s oldest pub and home to the famous Rum Swizzle. Here, we were greeted by only a short line of guests waiting for a table. The Crystal Cave is the larger and more popular of the two; though, I liked the Fantasy Cave better. Of note, both caves do have 80+ stairs, with the stairs in the Fantasy Cave being steeper. We were up by about 7 AM with some coffee and continental breakfast items from the Observation Lounge. Once the ship we cleared, we headed ashore around 9 AM.

There's also the adults-only lunch spot where I always enjoy a beachside barbecue. This peaceful chair-lined beach is a quiet spot away from the family beach, where I can sit back and enjoy the view or take a chair down to the water and let the waves crash over me. The best part about seeing the characters is that the lines to take pictures with them are never long. On a recent sailing, I saw Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto all in 30 minutes. I enjoy seeing the Disney characters on the ship, but love seeing Mickey and his pals even more at Castaway Cay. A rescue swimmer was then deployed from the Jayhawk onto the cruise ship and was able to prepare the patient for evacuation.

According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), cruising is back in full force as of 2023. This is good news for Disney, who has three new ships debuting before the end of 2025. The 2023 State of the Cruise Industry CLIA report states that 85% of travelers who have cruised plan to cruise again, which is nine percent higher than pre-pandemic levels. Adults can dine, relax and immerse themselves in magical settings designed just for them on the Disney Wish - from upscale restaurants and sophisticated lounges to an expansive pool area. The primary spot for theatrical productions on board the ship will be the Walt Disney Theatre. Both “Beauty and the Beast” and “Disney Seas the Adventure” will entertain cruisers in the theater, and there will also be a new, not-yet-announced play at sea. For the first time ever on a Disney Cruise Line ship, some elements from Disney theme parks were incorporated into some special spots and attractions. There’s the Tomorrow Tower Suite that was inspired by EPCOT, the beloved, science-forward Walt Disney World theme park. Disney Fantasy is currently sailing a 7-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary and was northwest of Aguadilla on Puerto Rico’s northwestern coast at the time of the evacuation.

Measuring just 83,000 gross tons, it's about 40% smaller than the new Disney Wish. As a result, it has fewer venues than Disney Wish but also a more intimate feel. In all, Disney operates just five cruise vessels — far fewer than such cruise brands as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line. Founded in 1998, the line has gone long periods without adding a single new vessel, with occasional bursts of expansion, including one taking place right now. Created exclusively for the Disney Wish Cruise, this Broadway-style show features innovative special effects, striking choreography, and reimagined scenario that will surprise and amuse guests of all ages.

Disney Wish is the newest ship to join the Disney Cruise Line family, having first set sail in Summer 2022.

Not only is this the place where you begin your journey on the ship, it’s one where you will likely spend time in for entertainment, hanging out with your fellow travelers, and other special surprises. The maiden voyage will set sail on June 9, 2022, with a five-night cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida, to Nassau, Bahamas, and Castaway Cay, Disney's private island. From new attractions to dining experiences, here’s just a taste of what you can expect.

Those who take a cruise on the ship will be able to enjoy spaces, experiences and entertainment themed around stories like The Lion King, Hercules and One Hundred and One Dalmatians. The ship’s motif is enchantment, and it focuses on a tale as old as time -- wishing upon a star. It intends to include all the classic things families love about Disney cruises while also introducing new and incredible experiences to make the trip even more memorable.

One thing I love about Disney Cruise Line and Castaway Cay is that there are plenty of adults-only spaces where kids are strictly not allowed. Over the past decade, I've taken eight Disney cruises with my family and friends. When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call. Parents can get some much-needed alone time easily on the Disney Treasure. There are options for babies, small children, older children, tweens, and teens. Just like on every other Disney Cruise Line ship, young cruisers can enjoy Disney’s Oceaneer Club, Edge, Vibe or It’s a Small World Nursery.

AquaMouse is a thrilling water adventure inspired by the adventures of Mickey and Minnie. Lighting and special effects make this 760 feet of twisting slides a full-filled experience for kids obsessed with water parks and Disney. Quiet Cove is a luxurious Disney Wish Cruise retreat zone where you can indulge in solitude.

The fifth ship in its fleet, the Disney Wish, where beloved stories from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar are brought to life with one-of-a-kind performances. The new cruise ship wows its guests with astounding gourmet and entertainment offerings, paired with Disney Cruise Line fan-favorite offerings. Then there’s the Tomorrow Tower Suite, a one-of-a-kind suite that is in the ship’s forward tunnel.
